Being Ruby Rich 21-23 June 2017

One of cinema's most important critics and thinkers B Ruby Rich comes to Barbican London this week for a  Club des Femmes  homage to her work and in a celebration of our legacy of New Queer Cinema. From her keynote speech to an exploration of queer media online, Rich brings us up to date on what she is calling the 'cinema of urgency'.

Kicking off on Wednesday at Birkbeck Cinema with an all-day symposium looking at the three movements with which Rich is most associated: 1970s and 1980s feminist cinema,  1990s and 2000s international New Queer Cinema and 21st century social documentary. Events will continue with a four-day series of screenings at Barbican Cinema co-curated by queer-feminist collective Club des Femmes and B Ruby Rich with talks by Rich herself.

Being Ruby Rich: A Room of Our Own Shorts + Panel discussion

This programme of shorts delves into the hidden spaces, abandoned and threatened by mainstream culture and economics, where queer culture and desires have flourished. Passing through generations and paralleling herstories the programme explores our contemporary moment and the precarity of intersectional queer feminist subject, space and community on both sides of the Atlantic.
Programme + panel discussion with guests Laura Hudson (artist, curator, lapsed filmmaker); Ben Walters (writer, campaigner), Liv Wynter (Sisters Uncut; WHEREISANAMENDIETA), and chaired by Claire Kurylowski (kuntinuum).
